As computer technology changes and evolves at a rapid pace, it is important for students to be able to effectively search for applicable information. Information literacy skills are currently being utilized in academic settings to teach students how to search for, identify, evaluate, and effectively use applicable information to complete tasks. These skills are currently being utilized in the Hort 120 course, Computer Applications in Landscape Contracting, to help students recognize the need for information, how to process it, and put into practice.
Student groups were assigned a written tutorial from our course wiki. Students were required to use Adobe Presenter (recorded at Penn State’s Digital Commons) ) and Adobe Captivate (recorded in the Landscape Contracting department) to create the video tutorial. The tutorials used a combination of Presenter and Captivate to illustrate a specific task relating to software tool function.
Before recording, student groups created PowerPoint slides, a written script to accompany the PowerPoint, and a storyboard for the Captivate demonstration. The tutorials used a combination of text, images or screen shots, and animations to explain the processes. Screen capture software was used to illustrate the software task.
Video Tutorials can be found by clicking here or within the “How Does it Work” section of each technology group.
